(From BBC News)　 　https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cer3mr09vzxo 　文中で使われている 128 people taken hostage by Hamas という表現について、質問です。 　もし、128 people taken by Hamas 「ハマスに捉えれらた128人の人々」という表現であれば、文の構造を容易に理解出来るのですが、英文記事原文の中で示された taken hostage という表現の「構造」が理解出来ません。意味は、おそらく、128 people taken in hostage by Hamas、と同じような意味だと思うのですが・・・。 　英語には、「一般動詞＋形容詞」、例えば、look tired, appear intent on doing something, という型がありますが、この文脈での hostage は「形容詞」として機能しているのでしょうか。いや、しかしながら、そもそも、「知覚動詞＋形容詞」のように、「take＋形容詞」、などという表現は、あるのでしょうか？ 　毎回、本当に、ありがとうございます。そして、今回も、ご教授を頂きたく、何卒、よろしくお願い申し上げます。 【回答】 　先ず、ご質問の英文の意味は、「イスラエルの発表によると、10月7日に、ハマスによって、捕虜とされた128人は、行方が分からないままで、そのうちの３６人は、死亡したものと推測されている」ということで、be taken hostage とは、be taken as hostages のことを言いますが、この表現の構造は、私もよく分かりません。これが、もし、be taken captive の場合は、captive が「形容詞」で、補語の位置付けとなりますが、hostage は「名詞」なので、be taken <hostage> という構造が、分からなくなります。これは、英語によくある「名詞」の「副詞用法」の一つで、「捕虜として、捉えられる」(be taken as a hostage) の省略形から、生じたのではないか、と想像されます。
